Microsoft recently finished a study where a data centre was sunk to the ocean floor off the coast of Orkney for two years. As a result of the lower temperatures at the bottom of the ocean, and the temperate climate of that part of the world, there was no need for artificial cooling of the data centre, meaning a considerable reduction in energy consumption.
